Change of Address Checklist When Moving: Every Account, Every Agency

Most people notify their bank and file a postal redirection, then discover for the next six months that they missed seventeen other accounts. A tax document goes to the wrong address. The car insurance renewal doesn't arrive. The GP surgery is still sending reminders to the old house. The vehicle registration lapses because the renewal notice never arrived.

The "ghost account" problem is real: any account or agency that holds your old address will eventually send something to it. This checklist is designed to catch all of them.

How to Work Through This List

The most reliable method is to spend 30 minutes with three months of bank and credit card statements and identify every company that charged you during that period. Each one has your address. Work through this checklist in parallel with that review — the combination catches both recurring services you've forgotten and one-off organisations that don't show up on statements.

Aim to complete address changes 2–3 weeks before moving day so there's time for updates to process. Postal redirection is a safety net, not a replacement for direct updates.

Government and Official Bodies

These are the highest priority because errors affect tax filings, benefit payments, voting eligibility, and legal documents.

United States

  • USPS mail forwarding — file at moversguide.usps.com; costs a nominal identity verification fee; takes 7–10 business days to activate
  • IRS — file Form 8822 (Change of Address) or update when you file your next return; critical for tax refunds and notices
  • State DMV — update your driver's licence and vehicle registration; most states require this within 30 days of moving; address on your registration affects where renewal notices and any tickets are sent
  • Social Security Administration — update via ssa.gov; affects benefit statements and any correspondence
  • Voter registration — update with your state's secretary of state; voting eligibility is tied to your registered address
  • VA or other federal benefit agencies — if applicable

United Kingdom

  • Royal Mail redirection — starts at around £39.50 for three months per surname; requires at least five days' notice; apply at royalmail.com
  • DVLA — you must update both your driving licence and your vehicle V5C logbook separately; failure to update the V5C can result in a £1,000 fine; neither update is automatic
  • HMRC — update via your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk; affects income tax, National Insurance, and any tax credits or child benefit payments
  • Electoral roll — register at your new address via gov.uk/register-to-vote; you cannot vote in local or national elections until this is done
  • TV Licensing — update or transfer your licence to the new address to avoid fines and unnecessary renewal notices
  • NHS GP — register with a GP practice near your new address and request that records be transferred; this is not automatic

Australia

  • Australia Post redirection — starts at around $38 for one month; apply at auspost.com.au; requires three business days to activate
  • AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) — update your enrolment at aec.gov.au; compulsory voting means an incorrect address can cause problems
  • ATO (Australian Taxation Office) — update via your myGov account; affects tax assessments, refunds, and correspondence
  • Medicare — update via myGov or the Express Plus Medicare app
  • State transport department — e.g., Service NSW, VicRoads, Transport for Queensland; update your driver's licence and vehicle registration; state-specific requirements apply

Canada

  • Canada Post mail forwarding — around $61.50 for three months within a province; apply at canadapost.ca; takes 5–10 business days
  • CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) — update via My Account at canada.ca or by calling 1-800-959-8281; affects tax returns, refunds, GST/HST credits, and benefit payments
  • Service Canada — update for EI, CPP, OAS, and any other federal benefits
  • Provincial health insurance — e.g., OHIP in Ontario, RAMQ in Quebec; each province has its own process; coverage requirements vary if you're moving provinces
  • Provincial vehicle and licence authority — e.g., ServiceOntario, ICBC in BC; update driver's licence and vehicle registration

Financial Accounts

  • Primary bank accounts — update each bank separately; do not assume the change propagates across accounts at the same bank
  • Credit cards — update billing address for each card, including store cards and co-branded cards
  • Investment accounts and superannuation/pension — investment platforms, RRSP or super fund managers, any workplace pension schemes
  • Payroll — notify your employer's HR or payroll department so your pay stubs, W-2s (US), P60s (UK), or group certificates (AU) are sent to the right address
  • Life insurance — update your policy; an incorrect address can delay claims and renewals
  • Health insurance — if privately held, update both the billing address and the insured's address; premiums may change based on your new location
  • Home and contents insurance — your policy likely needs to be reissued for the new address; don't assume it automatically transfers; confirm with your insurer
  • Car insurance — your premium is partly based on where the vehicle is parked overnight; notify your insurer before the move date, not after

Subscriptions and Services

These are often forgotten because they renew automatically and don't require regular interaction.

  • Streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, etc.) — billing address only in most cases, but update it
  • Online shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay) — update the default delivery address; this prevents orders going to the old address
  • Gym or fitness memberships
  • Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
  • Box subscriptions (meal kits, beauty boxes, etc.)
  • Cloud storage or software subscriptions — update billing address to avoid declined renewals
  • Professional associations or memberships
  • Alumni associations

Medical and Personal

  • GP or primary care doctor (if not covered by a system-wide update as in the UK)
  • Dentist and orthodontist
  • Optometrist
  • Specialists you see regularly
  • Pharmacy — transfer prescriptions to a nearby pharmacy if your regular one is no longer convenient
  • Children's schools — if staying at the same school, update the emergency contact and billing address; if changing schools, request transcript transfers 3–4 weeks in advance
  • Childcare or after-school programmes

Other Accounts Commonly Missed

  • Loyalty programmes — airline frequent flyer accounts, supermarket loyalty cards, hotel points programmes
  • DVLA / vehicle licensing — if already covered under government section, confirm for any vehicles including motorcycles, boats, or caravans registered at the old address
  • Hire purchase or finance agreements — car finance, appliance leases, any repayment plan
  • Legal documents — update the address on your will if it specifies an address; notify your solicitor or estate attorney of the new address
  • Smart home devices — if you're leaving behind a Ring doorbell, Nest thermostat, or smart lock, factory reset them and transfer or remove your account before you vacate; these are security risks and data privacy issues if left active under your account

A Practical Approach to Not Missing Any

File the postal/mail redirection first — it catches anything that slips through. Then work through this list in priority order: government records, financial accounts, insurance, medical, then everything else. Use a simple spreadsheet or the checklist in the full moving toolkit to track what you've updated and when. Accounts with long processing times (DMV, electoral roll, HMRC) should be updated as early as possible.

The goal is to reach the 30-day mark in your new home with no mail still arriving at the old address and no renewals or government notices gone astray.

Our Moving Checklist includes the complete address change master list as a printable section alongside the full 8-week moving timeline, packing guides, and moving day schedule — everything organised so you work through it once and you're done.
